“The origin of AI (Artificial Intelligence) can be traced back to the mid-20th century. The field of AI emerged as a multidisciplinary area of study, bringing together ideas and concepts from various disciplines such as computer science, mathematics, psychology, philosophy, and engineering.
In the recent past, AI is the latest domain that is rapidly emerging while transforming the world with various innovations, making life easier.
The term “Artificial Intelligence” was coined in 1956 by John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester, and Claude Shannon during the Dartmouth Conference, where the participants discussed the possibility of creating machines that could exhibit intelligent behaviour.
In a nutshell, AI is a multi-disciplinary blended science ‘that aims to imitate the cognitive abilities of a human being.’ However, the idea of creating intelligent machines can be found in ancient myths and stories. The concept of artificial beings with human-like capabilities dates back to ancient civilizations, such as the ancient Greeks myths of Hephaestus and his automatons or the Jewish legend of the Golem.
The modern development of AI began with the advent of electronic computers. Early pioneers made significant contributions to the field. One notable example is Alan Turing, a British mathematician and computer scientist, who proposed the concept of a universal machine capable of performing any computation. Turing’s work laid the foundation for the field of computer science and influenced the development of AI.
Throughout the years, AI has progressed through different phases, including symbolic AI, neural networks, expert systems, and machine learning. Advancements in computing power, algorithms, and data availability have fueled the growth of AI, leading to breakthroughs in areas such as natural language processing, computer vision, robotics, and autonomous systems.
It’s important to note that AI is a continually evolving field, and its origin is not tied to a specific geographical location. Researchers, scientists, and engineers from around the world have contributed to the development and advancement of AI, making it a global endeavour with contributions from various countries and cultures.”
