Unlocking Access to Clean Water: Exploring STARTUP Opportunities in the Journey to Make Ocean Drinkable!

14062023 Editorials, WATER For ALL:

Water most essential

  • What would happen if there is no drinking water
  • How can STARTUPS work on providing water for all
  • Can we convert Ocean water into drinking water
  • Is it practical and what are the hurdles
  • How is water affecting the climate and vice versa

The world celebrated the two important events of mankind’s existence World Water Day on March 22 and World Environment Day on June 05. Just As I was pondering over the importance of these two aspects that helped us survive and thrive, I came across these two lines from Shri Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem, ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’ that goes like this, WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE AND NOT A DROP TO DRINK’. This shook me up from a deep slumber while taking up for granted that water is free-flowing.

Remembering the devastation created by COVID in the last few years as a result of our negligence towards nature. Most of us survived. However, in case of water becoming drop less then none of us would survive this much thought rattled my peace.

Being a STARTUP enthusiast, I remembered how we should view every problem as a challenge and find solutions to shape a successful STARTUP in this domain. Well, are you ready with me to turn into IDEAPRENEURS in Water for all concepts?

First, let us understand the magnitude of the issue, in the present context, nearly two billion are suffering without safe drinking water. And nearly half of the world’s population is facing an acute shortage of water. However, it is well known that almost 70% of the earth has water. The problem is most of it is Ocean water that is non-drinkable. Now the task is how to convert this for mankind’s utility.

‘Making oceans drinkable on a large scale is a complex and challenging task. While desalination processes exist to convert seawater into freshwater, implementing such systems on an oceanic scale is currently not practical due to cost, energy requirements, and environmental considerations. However, here are a few potential approaches to address water scarcity:

DESALINATION: Desalination plants can be constructed near coastal areas to extract salt and impurities from seawater, making it suitable for drinking. This technology is already used in some regions, but it requires significant energy inputs and can have environmental impacts from the discharge of concentrated brine.

WATER CONSERVATION: Implementing efficient water management practices, such as reducing waste and improving agricultural irrigation techniques, can help conserve freshwater resources. This approach focuses on using existing freshwater sources more sustainably rather than relying on ocean water.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT: Continued investment in research and development can lead to advancements in desalination technologies, making them more efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly. This could involve exploring alternative methods such as solar desalination or innovative membrane technologies.

LOCALIZED SOLUTIONS: In areas facing severe water scarcity, smaller-scale solutions can be implemented. Rainwater harvesting, fog collection systems, and underground water storage can help supplement local water supplies without relying solely on desalination or large-scale projects.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION: Protecting and restoring natural water sources, such as rivers, lakes, and wetlands, are crucial for maintaining freshwater supplies. Preserving ecosystems and reducing pollution can help maintain the quality and quantity of available freshwater resources.

It’s important to note that these solutions should be combined with efforts to address the root causes of water scarcity, including population growth, climate change, and unsustainable water management practices. Collaboration between governments, organizations, and communities is essential to ensure long-term access to clean drinking water for everyone.’
