In the bustling city of Hyderabad, a new narrative of nutrition, heritage, and sustainability was quietly taking shape in 2019. Behind this transformation stood LAKSHMI HARITHA BHAVANI, a professor with a passion for Indian culture and an entrepreneur with a vision to revive ancient grains.

Her journey from academia to entrepreneurship gave birth to ANCIENT FOODS INDIA, a food processing company with a mission to promote millet-based foods in modern cuisine.

The Seed of an Idea

Bhavani’s journey began with her fascination for millets, often called the “grains of antiquity.” While these grains were an integral part of India’s culinary past, they had faded into the shadows, overshadowed by the global dominance of rice and wheat.

Observing the rising health concerns and environmental challenges posed by modern agriculture, the founder envisioned a brand that could bridge the gap between tradition and modernity, health and taste, and sustainability and innovation.

In November 2019, ANCIENT FOODS INDIA was born. The mission was clear: to offer quality millet-based ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook foods while reviving India’s cultural heritage and addressing global food sustainability challenges.

Laying the Foundation

The first milestone came in February 2021, when ANCIENT FOODS INDIA launched its first outlet. This marked the beginning of a direct connection with consumers who were introduced to a range of millet-based products designed to suit modern lifestyles.

From nutrient-dense millet breakfast mixes to ready-to-cook millet snacks, the brand was redefining convenience without compromising on health.

The professor’s determination and entrepreneurial drive led to further expansion. By August 2022, the company had transitioned to a semi-automatic manufacturing facility spread over 2,000 square feet.

This upgrade was made possible through support from the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Program (PMEGP) and the State Bank of India (SBI). The new facility enabled increased production capacity and consistent product quality, paving the way for a larger market reach.

Making a Mark

ANCIENT FOODS INDIA’s unwavering focus on quality, sustainability, and innovation soon began garnering attention. In August 2023, the brand achieved a significant milestone when it was recognized among the top 100 Indian startups.

This recognition was not just a testament to the company’s growth but also an acknowledgment of its contribution to promoting nutritious eating habits and sustainable agricultural practices.

The Vision: Heritage Meets Innovation

At the heart of ANCIENT FOODS INDIA lies its vision: to become the leading provider of millet-based foods that celebrate India’s rich heritage while addressing modern health and environmental challenges.

Quality Products: By sourcing high-grade millets directly from local farmers, the company ensures its products meet the highest nutritional and safety standards.

Sustainability: Millets are climate-resilient crops that require less water and fewer resources to grow. By promoting millet consumption, the brand contributes to reducing the environmental footprint of agriculture.

Cultural Heritage: Through its products, Ancient Foods India tells the story of India’s ancient grains, bringing traditional flavors to contemporary dining tables.

Innovation: Blending age-old recipes with modern food technology, the brand offers convenient and delicious solutions for health-conscious consumers.

The Path Ahead

The journey of ANCIENT FOODS INDIA is a testament to how a single idea, rooted in passion and purpose, can create ripples of change. From its humble beginnings to being a recognized name in India’s startup ecosystem, the company continues to thrive on its mission to redefine healthy eating.

As the demand for nutritious and sustainable food grows, ANCIENT FOODS INDIA is poised to expand its footprint, both within India and globally. With Bhavani at the helm, the company is not just promoting millets but also inspiring a movement that blends health, heritage, and sustainability in every bite.

In a world striving for balance between modernity and tradition, ANCIENT FOODS INDIA stands tall, proving that the seeds of ancient wisdom can indeed bloom in the fields of modern innovation.
